Blue Orange Green Pink Purple

off-island state of mind

home is an island.

c.o.l.

another random job i had when i lived on guam was completing annual cost-of-living (C.O.L) surveys for a new zealand-based firm. every year, james and i would troll from store to store and make calls to inquire about basic necessities and services that an "ex-patriate" would need while living on guam. after being home and living as adult (as opposed to the last time i lived at home- high school) and then returning here to california, i can't help but do a cost comparison to show the hard numbers.

guam:

  • rent:850
  • power:300
  • water:65
  • cable:115
  • cell phones-2 lines+data: 205
  • groceries: 450
  • gas: 400
  • school tuition: 375
  • total:3095.00

    california:

  • rent: 1600
  • power:75
  • water:60
  • gas:50
  • cable/cell-3 lines+data:225
  • groceries:300
  • gas/transportation: 350
  • school tuition: 0
  • total:2660.00

major difference here is that current rent in california is going toward a mortgage as opposed to a third party. and my salary is 27% greater.

while daily consumables are definitely less expensive off the island - the quality of life on island quite matches up with what you pay for. this means i paid lower rent for a small apartment (although we lived steps away from the beach!) and drove a 10-year old car (which i miss tremendously!!). and then there are all those miscellaneous expenses which depend on your lifestyle:

  • eating out on guam is a lot cheaper...and can either be less frequent due to the commonplace parties and social gatherings (which always have to have food!!, especially those medical fundraiser happy hours rolled into one) or more frequent because food is everywhere.
  • bar tabs...a $300 tab can be the norm for a weekend out in california but knowing the right bartender or getting in on those lovely distributor specials back home can really get you into a drunken stupor for pennies, literally!

biggest disadvantages affecting quality of life and overall contentment are healthcare and education:

  • healthcare on guam is horrifying. a trip to the single hospital on any day will force you into good health to avoid it all costs.
  • while private school tuition in california is exponentially greater...the cost of just substandard education on guam is a joke. my son is a much happier and engaged student in california...this has been proven.

to sum it all up...life on guam meant less driving, more eating and drinking...and an excess amount of time to soak up the sun. all those memories in between can never be quantified...priceless, to say the least.

    mimi from guam

  • about me
*off-island* refers to the state of being away from the island of guam. you can now follow my spin-off food blog, off-is land influence food refelections

from my lush homeland to the city by the bay and into the far reaches of the suburbs, i've made my home twice. it was fun in my 20's and even better in my 30's. documenting it all makes me feel important (to myself). here you'll find my multi-tasking adventures with food and the fashionable, my love affair with my dvr, an occasional moment of profound thought, a lot of useless yet laughable ranting, and lately stuff about my life in constant re-arrangement. i'm only fab-ulous because it's in my name.
