off-island state of mind

home is an island.

a year in passing

everyday is a reflection on now vs. then. it's hard to separate life on guam from where i am today. it has inspired me to perpetuate my ties to home and i'm working on so many creative projects at the moment - all of which i'm convinced will come into the limelight one day. being home is literally and figuratively an island. the lack of stimulation, isolation, limited engagements keep you there. and for those that never left, complacency becomes their greatest vice. it is not uncommon to be unhappy with your job, not make enough income, not have any growth in the workplace, not interact with people socially, or any combination or all of the above. what keeps you there can only be understood on a personal level.
it is truly the beauty and spirit of people and place that solidifies that sense of belonging "home". there are countless people and experiences i would never had come into my life (my husband included) had i not moved home. it was all on a whim - triggered by a job offered while on vacation and a toxic relationship finally coming to an end. it proved to me what most might consider a tired cliche: "everything happens for a reason".
and for those that are new to the island from somewhere else or have left after experiencing its full potential, the dichotomy is truly effective. nothing will ever take the place of those people and places left behind...but i'm blessed that i've only come to know of how remarkable they are after having left.

mimi from guam

  • about me
*off-island* refers to the state of being away from the island of guam. you can now follow my spin-off food blog, off-is land influence food refelections

from my lush homeland to the city by the bay and into the far reaches of the suburbs, i've made my home twice. it was fun in my 20's and even better in my 30's. documenting it all makes me feel important (to myself). here you'll find my multi-tasking adventures with food and the fashionable, my love affair with my dvr, an occasional moment of profound thought, a lot of useless yet laughable ranting, and lately stuff about my life in constant re-arrangement. i'm only fab-ulous because it's in my name.
