i felt more than compelled to write about it since digesting the show over the last nineteen hours. never has the return of a show received so much unilateral hype from across the board...tweens, grown-ass men, and drag queens alike have crossed over to the gleek side. talk about it hit the blog world and facebook walls all over the place and it was like a monster inside of me needing to be let go.
This viewing season my DVR (unfortunately not TiVo) is truly multitasking...multiple recordings in one time slot and having to supplement this with downloaded episodes from the premium channels. And then don't even get me started on the forums, blogs, and chatter I have to keep up with to come full circle. After all this homework if you will, I wasn't satisfied.
Last night's premiere did due diligence by mocking all the criticism it's been subject to...the gay summer, the karaoke, and returning to the shire...and of course they even reminded us what we've all been thinking: "shu can't rap". The gleeks performed all the hits we've been listening to all summer..Billionaire, Elevator, and Empire State of Mind....and then they added the bieber-clone Sam and a guest star, proud-to-be-Filipino and arguably now the most famous Filipino (other than Arnel Pineda), Sunshine.(begin rant)
First gripe was that she had not one but two first names. Was a more genuine Filipino-sounding last name....like Ducalaylayongaban (completely made up) not dignified enough for prime time? Only white people have two last names. I guess Sunshine was a better choice than Jinky, Bubbles, or Aiza. Another gripe was her styling...super FOBulous....which I don't understand because her image from her Oprah debut has improved since releasing her album. The big glasses, the pigtails, the mismatched prints...me no likey! At least they stayed true and had her come from the Philippines rather than somewhere obscure. I was afraid they would go for China or Indonesia (i know, not obscure). And to think, this all began with Oprah
But on to the rest of the show...The writers do a decent job of forcing you to be an intelligent viewer. I think a recurring theme last night was replacements...we saw Artie get replaced by Mike, Tanaka by Bieste, Santana by Quinn, Finn by Sam,....and almost Rachel by Sunshine. But most important of all...Glee has NOT been replaced. They still delivered the high school phenomena of loserville with songs that you'll be putting on repeat for a very very long time. I didn't get enough Kurt, Mercedes, or any Emma time. Brittany, once again, delivered the most lol-tastic one-liners. I know for a fact this hype can't last forever and am already getting sick of the after-school-special episodes that they tend to put out every now and then. it also seems like we'll never hear of sunshine corazon ever again.
