off-island state of mind

home is an island.

unconventional to say the least

planning an unconventional wedding on guam in 30 days was a modern day miracle, but not for me.

in true mimi fashion - i have pulled off what most people plan in a span of months, years even. these were the events that occured last week
  • may 15. kylan's graduation from 8th grade and graduation luncheon
  • may 16.our wedding ceremony and reception
  • may 17.my 31st birthday and impromptu party in our newlywed suite where i recycled, errr extended the use of our wedding cake
  • may 18. wisdom tooth (my fourth and final one!)extraction

to say that we've pulled it off is the understatement of the year. it took me and james about 60 seconds to set the date and it was more than a blessing to have put together such a beautiful event in only a matter of 30 days.

sure, like 80% of the women on this planet, most have already conjured up their perfect wedding day. but with the logistical drawbacks, major budgetary goals, and huge lists of guests to draw in....a (guam) wedding can be the most impossible and gut-wrenching feat. here is my list of the "musts" that i set for my own standards, in random order.

  • no cliches! - no silvery pearlescent muted color scheme, no satiny i'll-never-wear-these-again bridesmaid dresses, no cheesy speeches, no hotel ballroom round-table seating plans, no generic hotel food, no men in penguin suits, no flower girls, no money dance....and the list goes on
  • the colors had to scream "mimi"...teal, plum, chartreuse are a recurring them in my closet as we speak (err i type)
  • DIY (do-it-yourself) was transformed to DIM DO-IT-MYSELF - everything from the invites, graphics, tablescapes, wall backdrops, flower arrangements were hand crafted by me and my minions *cackle
  • food comes first - the caterer and menu were key to making sure our guests were happy!
  • THE TWO E's are the answer to everything - EBAY AND ETSY were a repeated source of all kinds of goodies
  • finally...loving minions such as your husband-to-be, son, family, and friends who will help you execute your vision and not hate you after

i also have a list of Only-On-Guam wedding-isms which are not anything profound but need to be written:

  • attempting to look for THE PERFECT wedding dress on this island could cause any of the following to occur: an ulcer, an aneurism, a stroke, or heart failure. they are not of this decade and ridculously expensive! i even entertained the idea of renting a gown from one of the wedding services that primarily caters to tourists. tourist or not, i was not going to pay 6k to rent a gown that fashionable 10 years ago. i was resourceful enough to have re-styled, re-used a dear friend's dress. it was perfect and i infused the perfect amount of mimi into it.
  • people really do read the list of wedding license applicants in the pdn. those marriage license application publications are the first sign of your commitment when people you thought you could hide from are already inviting themselves to your wedding
  • there is NO such thing ever as a small wedding on this lovely island. we started with fifty, settled for 150, and ended up with 300. i am talking aboug guests!

    mimi from guam

  • about me
*off-island* refers to the state of being away from the island of guam. you can now follow my spin-off food blog, off-is land influence food refelections

from my lush homeland to the city by the bay and into the far reaches of the suburbs, i've made my home twice. it was fun in my 20's and even better in my 30's. documenting it all makes me feel important (to myself). here you'll find my multi-tasking adventures with food and the fashionable, my love affair with my dvr, an occasional moment of profound thought, a lot of useless yet laughable ranting, and lately stuff about my life in constant re-arrangement. i'm only fab-ulous because it's in my name.
